If you are going to rent a cherrypicker, it’s important to ensure that you use it safely. To make sure the machine works as expected and that no safety incidents occur during operation, you should carry out a pre-start inspection.
Let’s take a look at some of the things that a pre-start inspection entails:
General Visual Inspection
The first step in a pre-start inspection is to visually check for any visible signs of damage, leaks, or notable wear and tear. This includes inspecting the boom, platform, guardrails, tyres, and any other structural components.
Look for any cracks, dents, or loose bolts, and assess whether these are sufficiently damaged to require repairs before operation.
Check Hydraulic And Fuel/Battery Levels
The next step is to ensure that the machine has adequate operational fluids before you start it. First, verify that the hydraulic oil and engine oil levels are at the recommended levels for smooth operation.
Next, if the machine is diesel- or petrol-operated, check that the fuel levels are sufficient. If it’s an electric model, check that the battery is sufficiently charged.
Inspect Tyres Or Tracks
Some cherrypickers are tire-based, while others operate on tracks. Either way, it’s crucial to inspect these components to ensure that the machine is stable and manoeuvrable.
For tyres, check that they are properly inflated and free from punctures, cracks, or excessive wear that could affect grip and lead to slippage. Tracks must also be secure, intact, and functioning correctly.
Check The Controls And Indicators
Before starting the machine, ensure it is operationally responsive. Test all the controls in both the ground station and the platform itself. This includes lifting, rotating, and driving functions. We also recommend that you check that the warning lights, gauges, and alarms are functioning as expected.
Check Safety Features
Safe operation depends on the machine’s safety features functioning correctly. Verify the functionality of the emergency stop buttons and fall arrest systems. Ensure the platform gates are secure and that toe boards are in good condition. Confirm that all warning decals, stickers, and operating instructions are visible and legible so they can be referred to when needed.
Check Outriggers
Cherry pickers often have outriggers or stabilisers. It is important to check that these operate properly, are level, and provide the necessary stability. Always ensure the machine can be levelled once the outriggers are extended.
