When purchasing a trailer-mounted boom lift for sale, it’s important to understand some of the more likely operating risks so that you can safely mitigate them.

After all, a trailer-mounted boom lift is a large and heavy piece of machinery. While extremely useful, improper and irresponsible use can be dangerous.

Instability

Trailer-mounted boom lifts can be unstable, especially when they are extended to their full height. If they tip over, they could cause injury and damage to others and the equipment itself.

Avoid positioning the machine on slopes or loose soil. If you have to use it on uneven terrain, use stabilising outriggers and support pads. Always engage the trailer’s parking brakes and ensure that the wheel chocks are put in place to prevent the trailer from moving when the lift is in operation.

Also, double and triple-check that the load is evenly distributed and that it does not exceed the boom lift’s maximum capacity.

Operator Error

Another major risk faced by anyone using heavy machinery is operator error. An inexperienced or untrained operator using the boom lift may misuse the controls and cause an accident.

To mitigate this risk, it’s important to ensure that your operators are properly trained and familiar with the boom lift’s controls, functionalities, and emergency procedures. The operator needs to understand the maximum reach and weight capacity of the boom lift and at what kind of angles it can safely operate.

Use a spotter, especially when operating in confined spaces or near potential hazards. The spotter can help guide the operator and alert them to hazards so that accidents can be avoided.

Electrical Hazards

Although any overhead obstacle could be a potential hazard, electrical hazards are one of the most serious risks for anyone using a trailer-mounted boom lift, as any contact with electrical lines could result in severe injury or death.

Always maintain a safe distance from power lines—usually about 10 m minimum. If working near power lines is unavoidable, then extreme caution should be used. Operators should also wear the right kind of PPE, including electrically rated gloves and boots.
