Choosing the right high-reach lifting equipment for the job is critical, as it can significantly impact both the cost of the job and its efficiency.

This requires careful consideration of the specific task at hand and the environment in which the job will take place.

Let’s take a look at some of the options available to you so you can determine which type of equipment would be most suited to your needs.

Vertical Masts

Vertical masts are often push-around pieces of equipment that are compact and manually operated, designed for light-duty tasks in tight spaces, with a small footprint that allows them to be easily manoeuvred.

These are best suited for indoor applications where space is restricted and are ideal for lightweight tasks such as minor indoor maintenance in warehouses, retail stores, and similar environments.

Scissor Lifts

Scissor lifts have a crisscrossing support mechanism that extends vertically and can reach fairly significant heights. They feature a large work platform that is stable and offers flexibility in terms of tasks, as it can support multiple workers and various types of equipment.

Common applications include construction, maintenance, and warehouse work.

However, scissor lifts can only extend vertically and have no horizontal reach.

Articulating Booms

Articulating booms feature a jointed arm that allows them to reach over obstacles and around structures, offering significant flexibility in terms of reach, making them ideal for awkwardly positioned tasks.

These are great for outdoor construction, tree trimming, and other tasks that require greater flexibility and navigation over uneven terrain or around awkwardly shaped structures.

Telescopic Booms

Telescopic booms are straight arms that extend upward or diagonally, offering a significantly higher reach than other lifting equipment, though they often lack articulation. This makes them best suited for high-elevation tasks that do not require much horizontal reach.

However, telescopic booms are not suitable for tasks that involve awkwardly situated workspaces requiring horizontal reach. They are best suited for tasks that need high vertical reach, such as steel erection, outdoor construction, and oil rigs.

Trailer-Mounted Booms

Trailer-mounted booms are valued for their mobility, as they can be easily transported between work sites. However, their reach is moderate at best.
