We had a client once tell us about how they watched another contractor try to load a 20-ton excavator onto a lowbed in the rain, with no chocks, no spotter, and plenty of misplaced confidence. Halfway up the ramp, the machine slipped, wheels spun, and the load toppled over. Eish!

Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the equipment was damaged, and it took forever to sort out the mess. However, all of this could’ve been avoided with something as basic as a safety checklist.

Lowbed truck hire can be dangerous if you’re not well-prepared to do things safely, legally, and without drama. If you’re hiring one to transport machinery or equipment, whether it’s access gear, a dozer, or something else, then there are a few critical checks that should happen before the load hits the road.

1. Load Assessment And Preparation

Start with the basics – What exactly are you transporting?

Yes, our lowbeds can handle up to 70 tons, but that’s only one part of the equation. You need to know your load’s weight, dimensions, and balance points. If your load exceeds the capacity of the trailer or isn’t properly distributed, you’re asking for trouble. Anything over 30 tons needs careful coordination and the right gear.

Also, don’t forget height clearance. Lowbeds sit closer to the ground for this reason, but bridge heights, signage, and overhead cables still need to be factored in before the truck rolls out.

2. Load Securing And Equipment Checks

Chains, straps, and binders used to secure your machinery must be rated for the load and in perfect condition.

Frayed straps or bent hooks have no place in this job. Double check that everything is tight, anchored correctly, and doesn’t interfere with the hydraulics or moving parts of the machine you’re transporting.

Also, check the vehicle itself. Tyres must be inflated and roadworthy. Ramps need to be locked, and warning signage must be visible.

For longer hauls, confirm that all lights and indicators are functioning and that your driver has the required permits and experience.
